Archive for January, 2014

Only one week into the New Year and if you’re like me most of your resolutions have already been forgotten. In my case, at least, the ones about losing weight and exercising are already a fading memory.

However, as weak as I am about keeping some resolutions, there are others that might be key to conservative success this year.

First, conservatives should resolve not to vote Republican – at least not without some serious thought. As recent history has shown, too many Republicans are willing to cave on policies that are destroying our country both financially and morally.

The truth is, Republicans have had just as much a hand in creating this bloated government and are just as prone to protect their political power as are Democrats. Neither party is a safe bet when it comes to dismantling an over-grown government or sacrificing personal power for the good of the people.

Conservatives, then, need to stop voting party line. Instead, as a service to their country, they should research the candidate’s promises, their actual political history and character, then campaign vigorously and vote accordingly.

Every American needs to resolve to keep an eye on the government. Again, this is not a Republican or Democrat issue, but it is an issue vital to the survival of our freedom and independence as a sovereign people for whom the government works. After finding out about NSA domestic spying, how the IRS targeted conservative Americans and with the continuing lies and deceptions about Benghazi – combined with a President who has proven his willingness to lie to the American people to protect his political agenda – and it becomes clear that questioning government motives is not bigotry, but common sense.

Conservatives need to resolve to stop apologizing for having the good sense to understand that true compassion does not include empowering dysfunctional behavior and that tolerance is not the same thing as acceptance.

Why should conservative apologize for fighting against liberal social programs that have enslaved the poor to the government and created a dependent social class. Dr. Ben Carson wrote in his book, America the Beautiful: Rediscovering What Made This Nation Great, “A truly moral nation enacts policies that encourage personal responsibility and discourage self-destructive behavior by not subsidizing people who live irresponsibly and make poor choices.”

And speaking of demeaning and dysfunctional behavior, conservatives need to resolve to say I told you so, as often as possible, when they are proven right. My personal thanks to Miley Cyrus and Obamacare … I told you so, in this column, years ago…remember?

Conservatives need to resolve to be less politically correct. If we’ve learned anything from the recent Duck Dynasty fiasco, it is that even those who disagree with Phil Robertson are fed up and afraid of the power that political bullies like the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) wield. That group, backed by millions of far left dollars, exists only to silence the debate through intimidation and black lists.

One spokesman for GLAAD said in an interview for CNN, “The world is changing, the country is changing and even the state in which Mr. Robertson lives is changing. He needs to get in line.”

Mr. Robertson, however, was not willing to “get in line” with the folks from GLAAD. Neither am I.

Someone’s morality is going to hold sway in politics; after all, laws are based on moral beliefs. While you might not agree with everything Phil Robertson says, are you willing to turn the ball completely over to GLAAD?

Conservatives, especially conservative leaders, need to resolve to grow a spine. Giving in without any significant gain is not compromise – it’s losing.

Besides, if we don’t even engage in the debate, how can we ever educate those young democratic minds of mush who, according to a recent Harvard study, approve of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) by 81 percent – yet, in the same study, only approve of Obamacare by 68 percent? Think about that…

Finally, every conservative must resolve to act on their love and devotion to country. Just hanging a flag in the front yard and occasionally voting is no longer enough. Today, it means standing up to be heard, even when it’s uncomfortable to do so. It means letters to the editor, active campaigning, and money or time to worthy conservative candidates.

Let’s make one thing Obama said be the truth – let’s cling to our guns and religion (and families and freedoms) regardless of how he and his liberal friends might laugh at those old fashioned ideas.

Time is precious for those of us who actually work to support a family, yet if we don’t leave for our children the same legacy of freedom and prosperity we inherited … then what is it all worth.

I resolve to think differently.

Conservatives I know
Like Christmas a lot…

But some Grinch like liberals,
Living far left,
Do not!

They won’t wish “merry Christmas, regardless the season,
Please don’t ask me why. No one quite knows the reason.
Could it be just because they don’t think to the right?
Or maybe, like the real Grinch, their shoes are too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
Is their tolerance gene, is two sizes too small.

But,
Whatever the reason,
Their genes or their shoes,
They hate “Merry Christmas,” which gives them the blues.
Staring down from a high horse, with sour Grinch frowns
They try to find ways to keep Christmas from towns.

Towns allow things grinches like least of all,
like when every good Christian, both the small and the tall,
Stands close together, with Christmas bells ringing.
And each hand-in-hand – together start singing!

They sing! And they sing!
and they sing! Sing! Sing! Sing!

Republicans and democrats all joined- it’s alarming!

And feasting together, they don’t find that charming!

One grinch decided something had to be done,

This was one battle that had to be won.

I’ll steal every reference to God from State Houses,

I’ll make fun of Christians and call them all louses.

I’ll steal all their presents, I’ll call them all greedy,

It will be for their good, everyone should be needy.

He snuck into houses, with a smile most unpleasant,
and from every house stole each and every present!
IPods and iPads! Roller skates! Drums!
Video games! Bicycles! Popcorn! And plums!
He stuffed them in bags. Then very nimbly,
Stuffed all the bags, one by one, up the chimney!

He did the same thing
To all of the houses

Leaving crumbs
Much too small
For even town mouses!

It was quarter past dawn…

When he finally was done

Then he waited to hear, if the battle he’d won.

“They’re just waking up and I know what they’ll do!
“Their mouths will hang open a minute or two
“Then all of the town folk will start crying BOO-HOO!”

So he paused, and put a hand to his ear.

It wouldn’t be long now – the timing was near.

And soon he heard sounds rising over the snow.
It started in low. Then it started to grow…

But the sound wasn’t sad!
Why, this sound sounded merry!
It couldn’t be so!
But it WAS merry! VERY!

Everyone in town, the tall and the small,
Was singing! Without any presents at all!
He hadn’t stopped Christmas from coming!
It came!
Somehow or other, it came just the same!

And the leftist with his Grinch-feet ice-cold in the snow,
Stood puzzling and puzzling: “How could it be so?
It came without ribbons! It came without tags!
“It came without packages, boxes or bags!”
And he puzzled three hours, `till his puzzler was sore.
Then he thought of something he hadn’t before!
“Maybe Christmas,” he thought, “doesn’t come from a store.
“Maybe Christmas…perhaps…means a little bit more!”

And what happened then…?
Well some people say
That his Grinchy intolerance
Grew three sizes that day!
And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight,
He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light
And he brought back the toys! And the food for the feast!
And he…

…He himself…!
A grinch carved the roast beast!

Merry Christmas everyone (even you grinches).
